Melgisorb Ag is an antimicrobial alginate dressing that can absorb large amounts of exudate due to it's carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) fibres. It also contains ionic silver which reduces bioburden in the wound by inactivating wound relevant pathogens within 4 hours with a sustained effect for up to 14 days. The alginate fibres become gel-like providing a moist environment conducive to wound healing. As the product contains alginate, it may assist in supporting the control of minor bleeding in superficial wound
Benefits of Melgisorb Ag
- Can be cut to shape
- Effective and sustained release of silver provides antimicrobial effect within 4 hours
- Sustained antimicrobial effect for 14 days
- Can stay in place for up to 7 days
- Absorbs up to 45% more than market leading silver hydrofiber dressings
- Excellent absorption to manage high levels of exudate
- Retains fluids to limit maceration of the wound
- Can be used under compression
- Non-adherent to the wound site or surrounding skin when wet
- Soft, comfortable and conformable to the body
- High wet strength to allow removal in one piece
Antimicrobial Action
The Melgisorb Ag is impregnated with silver sulphate ions which are activated when coming in contact with exudate. The silver sulphate ions bind to the cell wall proteins causing them to rupture. The silver sulphate ions may also bind to bacterial enzymes and cell DNA, inhibiting them to function normally. The ions will divide throughout the wound fluid until it reaches equilibrium, thus sustaining it's antimicrobial effect in the wound dressing and in the wound.
Areas of Use
Melgisorb Ag is intended for a wide range of moderately to heavily exuding wounds, flat or cavity wounds and both infected and noninfected
- Surgical wounds
- Trauma wounds
- Leg ulcers
- Pressures injuries
- Diabetic foot ulcers
- Graft and donor sites
- Critically colonised wounds
- Superficial and partial thickness burns
Precautions
Melgisorb Plus is not indicated for dry wounds, third degree burns, surgical implantations, individuals with a known sensitivity to alginates or silver, surgical implantation, to control heavy bleeding.
If the wound appears dry, saturate the dressing with sterile saline solution prior to removal. Gently remove the dressing from the wound bed
