Clindamycin in 5% Dextrose Injection is a sterile solution typically used for intravenous administration to treat serious bacterial infections. The solution contains clindamycin, an antibiotic that belongs to the lincosamide class, and is effective against a variety of gram-positive and anaerobic bacteria. The 5% dextrose serves as a diluent and provides a source of calories and hydration. The specific formulation—6 mg of clindamycin per mL in a 50 mL single-dose vial—ensures the precise dosage and concentration needed for treating infections. This combination is particularly useful in clinical settings where potent and immediate antibiotic therapy is required.

Indications and Usage:

  • Clindamycin is used to treat severe bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, particularly anaerobes, some aerobic gram-positive bacteria, and some protozoa.
  • Common indications include respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, septicemia, intra-abdominal infections, pelvic infections, and infections of the bone and joint.

Dosage and Administration:

  • Preparation and Administration: The solution should be administered intravenously. It’s crucial not to administer it rapidly due to risks of cardiopulmonary arrest.
  • Dosage: The typical adult dosage ranges between 600 mg to 1200 mg daily, divided into 2–4 doses, depending on the severity of the infection.
  • For children, the dose is generally calculated by weight (8-20 mg/kg/day), administered in divided doses.

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity: Known allergies to clindamycin, lincomycin, or any of the excipients in the formulation.
  • History of gastrointestinal disorders**: Particularly colitis due to antibiotic use.

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Colitis: Clindamycin can cause severe colitis, which may endanger the patient's life. If significant diarrhea occurs during or after therapy, discontinue the drug and investigate for possible Clostridium difficile infection.
  • Superinfection: Prolonged use may lead to the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.
  • Liver Function: Use cautiously in patients with hepatic dysfunction.
  • Allergic Reactions: Be vigilant of potential anaphylaxis and other severe allergic reactions.

Adverse Reactions:

Common side effects may include:

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain.
  • Hypersensitivity reactions: rash

WASHING INSTRUCTIONS:
